An NHL insider has given a big update this week on Vancouver Canucks trade target Mason McTavish, who is not at Anaheim's training camp due to his contract status.

The Vancouver Canucks went into the summer searching for an upgrade at the second line center position, but for various reasons, whether it be having contract & trade offers rejected or the cost being too high, General Manager Patrik Allvin wasn't able to land one before training camp.
"I wish I had some sexy names to throw at you. I don't. Nothing that was overly impactful or anything that felt like it was getting close. I'm sure like every team, you do your due diligence, that's part of your job, you go out there, you poke around, you start to...like around that time of year you hear names that team's are necessarily shopping, but teams are poking around on and they kind of let that name kind of get out there a little bit and it leads to nothing, because there's nothing there." David Pagnotta said.

He added, "I think the Canucks certainly tried to, you know, comb the market and see what was out there in terms of the center position. I just don't think they got close on anything."

Allvin and his management group are continuing their search for center help and one player they've been linked to this summer remains unsigned as we enter Day 3 of training camp around the NHL.

NHL insider gives big update on Vancouver Canucks trade target Mason McTavish

The Anaheim Ducks and Mason McTavish have been trying to get a new contract done for a while now, but as training camp got underway a few days ago, the former third overall pick decided to head back to Canada and is now skating with the Ontario Hockey League's Ottawa 67s as he awaits a new deal.
According to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, there is a pretty big gap in contract talks between the two sides, with sources telling him that McTavish is looking for a long-term deal in the range of $7-$8 million annually, while Anaheim has offered a five-year contract worth $5.5 million per season.
"According to league sources, McTavish is willing to sign a long-term deal, in the seven-to-eight-year range worth in the neighbourhood of $7 million to $8 million per season. The Ducks, however, have pitched a five-year contract worth around $5.5 million per season." Pagnotta said.

Vancouver's interest in Mason McTavish goes back to late July, but with the Ducks not necessarily wanting to move on from him, it's going to take a haul to pry him out of Anaheim.
Add on the massive contract that he is seeking, which would require Patrik Allvin find a way to move money out, it's hard to see the Canucks being successful in their pursuit of Mason McTavish, however stranger things have happened, so it's going to be a situation worth monitoring over the next couple of weeks.
