A former Vancouver Canucks goaltender has signed a multi-year contract extension with his NHL team this week, putting an end to the possibility of him hitting the UFA market next summer.
The National Hockey League's 2026 free agent class is looking quite thin after some big names, including Connor McDavid, Kirill Kaprizov and Kyle Connor have all signed new contract extensions within the last month.
Earlier in October, a report came out suggesting that the New Jersey Devils and former Vancouver Canucks goaltender Jacob Markstrom were working on a new contract to keep the Swede in The Garden State.
"Both sides, however, have expressed a desire to extend their relationship and Devils GM Tom Fitzgerald continues to negotiate a multi-year extension with Markstrom's camp, led by agent Pat Morris.
A week ago, ESPN and NHL Network's Kevin Weekes reported the Devils "initial offer was in the $5M per year range" though it is unclear how many years were pitched.
According to league sources, the hope is to secure a deal in the near future, though Markstrom is believed to be looking for a higher AAV." The Fourth Period reported last month.

New Jersey Devils sign ex-Vancouver Canuck Jacob Markstrom to contract extension
On Friday night, the New Jersey Devils revealed on social media that they've agreed to terms on a two-year contract extension worth $12 million US ($6 million AAV) with Jacob Markstrom.
"The New Jersey Devils announced today that the team has agreed to terms with goaltender Jacob Markstrom on a two-year contract worth $12,000,000, with an annual average value of $6,000,000. The announcement was made by President/General Manager Tom Fitzgerald." the club said.
The Gavle, Sweden is currently in his second season with the New Jersey Devils after being traded to them in the summer of 2024 from the Calgary Flames.
In four games, Markstrom, who returned from injury on Tuesday against the Colorado Avalanche, has a record of 2-2-0 along with a 5.13 goals against average and an .830 goals against average
The 35-year-old, who spent parts of seven seasons as a member of the Vancouver Canucks, will look to lead the New Jersey Devils to their second consecutive appearance in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, something the organization hasn't done since 2009 and 2010.
