A former Vancouver Canucks free agent target and British Columbia native has officially retired from professional hockey after 800 games in the National Hockey League.

Throughout this summer, we've seen a number of former Vancouver Canucks announce their retirement from hockey after lengthy careers, including Nick Bonino, who was hired as an Assistant Coach for the Pittsburgh Penguins, as well as Jaroslav Halak, the Slovak netminder who served as the team's backup during the 2021-22 season.
Other players with experience in the National Hockey League have also made the difficult decision to hang up the skates this summer too and on Monday, one with ties to British Columbia has called time on his playing career.

Former Vancouver Canucks trade target & BC native retires from professional hockey

In a social media post on Monday morning, it was announced that long-time National Hockey League defenseman Tyson Barrie is retiring after 800+ games.
"Tyson Barrie has announced his retirement from hockey 👏

The 2009 third-round pick played in 822 games over the course of his NHL career." Sportsnet said.
Barrie, a native of Victoria, British Columbia, began his career in the NHL during the 2011-12 season with the Colorado Avalanche, the team that selected him 64th overall in 2009.
The 34-year-old would go on to spend parts of eight seasons with the Avalanche before being traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs in the summer of 2019 as part of a bigger deal involving Nazem Kadri, among other assets.
After a one-year stint with the Maple Leafs, Barrie went on to suit up for the Edmonton Oilers for parts of three seasons, along with the Nashville Predators and most recently, the Calgary Flames, who he earned a contract with after a PTO in training camp last fall.
Last summer, before he eventually signed with the Calgary Flames, the Vancouver Canucks reportedly pondered the possibility of bringing Tyson Barrie to camp on a PTO, which would've allowed him to finish off his career in his home province, but ultimately, Patrik Allvin and the team's management group passed up on the opportunity.
In total, Barrie would go on to suit up in 822 games in the National Hockey League across parts of 14 seasons, registering 508 points (110 goals, 398 assists), 263 penalty minutes and was a minus-83.
Everyone here at Canucks Daily would like to congratulate Tyson Barrie on a solid professional hockey career and wish him all the best in retirement.
