LATEST | Rick Tocchet points out what the Canucks need to do to make the playoffs
After the Canucks hired head coach Rick Tocchet in late-January, the team's season the team started to turn things around a bit. In March and April, they went 14-6-2 and gave fans some optimism for the following season.
On Tuesday, Rick Tocchet was on Sportsnet 650 radio and discussed the team's need to get off to a strong start to the 2023-24 campaign and to make the most of their practices amid a compact schedule.
"That's the big key with our team is we've got to create those habits and we've got to stay on top of each other. Coaches and players, make each other accountable. The way we change, come off the ice, with the way we practice. We're a team that's you know, we don't have the greatest schedule, so we don't have a lot of practices compared to a lot of other teams. So we can't waste practices. That's what I have to relay to these young guys too."
As Tocchet mentions, the Canucks don't have a favourable schedule. They play five games in ten days to open the 2023-24 campaign. They open the season at home on October 11th against the Edmonton Oilers and then will go on a five game road trip where they'll face Edmonton, Philadelphia, Tampa Bay, Florida and Nashville, before returning home on October 27th to play St. Louis.
