Pettersson's cap hit on his next deal is expected to be significant, potentially over the $10 million mark, but according to a report from The Athletic, the 24-year-old is waiting for another big star to sign his contract, before inking an extension with the Canucks.
The Athletic's Harman Dayal is reporting that Pettersson, among other big names eligible to sign an extension, are waiting to begin negotiations with their respective team's until Toronto Maple Leafs star Auston Matthews signs his deal, which is expected to be in the range of $13.5 million AAV.
Dayal says that once Matthews puts pen to paper on an extension with the Maple Leafs, it'll drive up the price for players around the league, including Elias Pettersson.
Pettersson, a native of Sundsvall, Sweden, is looking to replicate the incredible season he had last year, where he put up 102 points (39 goals, 63 assists) in 80 games. Pettersson is hitting his prime right now and there's no doubt he can be a consistent 90-100 point player in his career, which would definitely make paying him roughly $10 million AAV worth it.
