Canucks' Carson Soucy is Making His Way Back onto Rick Tocchet's Good List
Vancouver Canucks defenseman Carson Soucy is proving that he still has what it takes to be a competent defender in the National Hockey League.
In general, it has been a rough season for defenseman Carson Soucy, and as a result, has been on the receiving end of some tough criticism from fans and Canucks media.
Soucy is paired with veteran defender Tyler Myers on the second d-line, and needless to say, weakest aspect of the teams makeup.
It has even been confirmed that general manager Patrik Allvin is urgently shopping for an upgrade for this role, knowing it is holding them back from making a push for the Stanley Cup.
Soucy and Myers have come by their negative goal differential honestly, meaning it hasn't just been a case of bad luck. Of the 50 defence pairings around the NHL that have played at least 150 minutes together at 5-on-5, Soucy and Myers have the worst corsi percentage at 37.1% - shot attempts are 227-to-134 for their opposition when they're on the ice.
Carson Soucy is finally finding his game with the Vancouver Canucks
With Filip Hronek now out for at-least 8 weeks with a couple of injuries, Soucy has actually been able to step up and play some solid hockey.
After the Canucks win over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday, he commented on what it has been like get his groove back at such a crucial time.
«I'm definitely feeling better with the puck,» he said, with a grin, after Friday's game. «Just every game, trying to get more puck touches, just taking that on myself.»
The overall team defense was pretty weak in the first period, but to start the second, led by Soucy it was a completely different story.
Even head coach Rick Tocchet made some surprisingly positive comments on his #3 d-man.
«There weren't many guys who were positive Tocchet said. «I thought Soucy was one of those. I thought that Soucy kind of settled everybody.»
Soucy Responded:
«They are one of the best rush teams in the league. I think that's credit to us for adjusting where they're finding their speed,» Soucy said.
Like stated earlier, Soucy finally finding the success and confidence coming at just the right time as the Canucks are extremely thin on the defensive side of the puck.
