An NHL insider has given an update on the future of Adam Foote as the head of the Vancouver Canucks with his first season as bench boss not going as expected.
The Vancouver Canucks considered all of their options last spring when searching for their new head coach after Rick Tocchet departed the organization to join his former club, the Philadelphia Flyers.
Ultimately, Patrik Allvin and Jim Rutherford decided remain internal with their next head coach and promoted Adam Foote from his previous role as assistant coach and so far, it hasn't been the greatest of bets for the organization.
Heading into the NHL's Olympic break, the Vancouver Canucks sit dead last in the National Hockey League's overall standings with a record of 18-33-6 through 57 games and some have been wondering if Adam Foote is right coach to lead them through their rebuild.
NHL insider gives update on Adam Foote's future as head coach of the Vancouver Canucks
Earlier this week, TSN insider Darren Dreger was making an appearance on Sekeres and Price and he gave an update on Adam Foote's future as head coach of the Vancouver Canucks.
Dreger said that the Vancouver Canucks' management group doesn't have an appetite to make a coaching change at the moment and for at least the remainder of the 2025-26 campaign, Adam Foote will remain in his role as head coach.
"Well they're very supportive right now and you know, as you would expect. Foote is in constant conversation with both Patrik Allvin and Jimmy Rutherford day-by-day for sure and probably a number of times over the course of the day. So any concerns the management would have with his handling of one player versus another, that would be dealt with and talked about internally." Dreger said.
He added, "I can tell you that as far as management's standpoint right now, there's no interest in removing Adam Foote as head coach."
He added, "I can tell you that as far as management's standpoint right now, there's no interest in removing Adam Foote as head coach."
This update from Dreger doesn't come as much of a surprise given that the Vancouver Canucks' main goal right now is to get the highest pick possible in the 2026 NHL Entry Draft and the best way to ensure that is to stay the course, along with parting with some players ahead of the deadline in early March.
Following the 2025-26 campaign, Adam Foote is under contract for two more years with a reported salary of $1.5 million USD and while that's not a ton of money for the club, if they were to part ways with the two-time Stanley Cup champion, it would probably come either in the offseason or early next season, depending on how the club is performing.
