Failed Blockbuster Trade Between the Vancouver Canucks and Buffalo Sabres Comes to the Surface
New details of a failed blockbuster trade between the Vancouver Canucks and Buffalo Sabres comes to the surface on Wednesday, and it almost saw Elias Pettersson depart from the organization.
Going back to the beginning of the 2024-25 NHL season, there were constant rumors and reports that linked the Vancouver Canucks and Buffalo Sabres defenseman Bowen Byram to one another.
A recent report by NHL insider David Pagnotta reinforced that the Canucks "missed their shot" at acquiring the 24-year-old star d-man, at what could have been a major splash for Vancouver's blue line.
"So, with the Canucks, I think it was real more so in the season than it was this past June,» Pagnotta said. «But honestly, for me, it would probably be something coming out of left field once all is said and done if something does happen with the Canucks." - David Pagnotta

Although there was still somewhat of a chance that the Canucks could have engaged in more talks with the Sabres, Buffalo put an end to a lot of the rumors when they signed Byram to a two-year contract worth $12.5 million ($6.25 million AAV).

After Pagnotta said the Canucks missed their shot, he subsequently dropped some major news in which it revealed that the Sabres did indeed engage the Canucks in a trade that would have dealt Elias Pettersson to Buffalo.
The Canucks' demands of course started with acquiring Bowen Byram, but it appeared that the negotiations died down fairly quickly.
Pagnotta had this to say about the potential blockbuster:
«I don't know this definitively, trying to read the tea leaves, between the lines, and all that that stuff, it sounded like Buffalo re-engaged to say, 'hey, what would Petey (Pettersson) cost? Has the price changed?' And that's kind of where that name, Byram's name, re-entered the mix. But it obviously didn't get anywhere.»

Although it is unknown what the full deal would have been, it is obvious that the extra pieces involved where the turning point in which ended the trade talks, good thing too because according to Canucks GM Patrik Allvin, EP40 is having one heck of an offseason.
