A former top-five pick, who was just made available by his club, has emerged as a trade option for Vancouver Canucks GM Patrik Allvin amid the team's rebuild plans.
The Vancouver Canucks' rebuild is in full swing, with the club parting ways with captain Quinn Hughes and forward Kiefer Sherwood in deals with the Minnesota Wild and San Jose Sharks, respectively.
Vancouver's goals amid their rebuild are to trade off their pending unrestricted free agents and some veterans, get the highest pick possible in the 2026 NHL Entry Draft and get younger ahead of the 2025-26 season.
"But prior to this, we already made the decision that we were going to go with younger players. Over the past few years, our staff has done a good job and we have a number of good young players, whether they're in our lineup now or close to getting in our lineup. And those players are going to get a chance to play. Based on the circumstances with this team, this is the year to do it. The fact of the matter is we're in a rebuild." President of Hockey Operations Jim Rutherford said recently.

In a recent article for The Fourth Period, it was reported that the Seattle Kraken are hoping to make a big splash ahead of the trade deadline, with their sights set on landing a top-six forward.
In order to get the piece they need for a playoff push, Seattle Kraken General Manager Jason Botterill is reportedly willing to part ways with the team's 2022 fourth overall pick, Shane Wright.
"Another tidbit from today's show: Sources have told me the Seattle Kraken are open to moving Shane Wright. They've been searching for a top-six forward and packaging Wright might get them that." David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period said.
In his draft year, Wright was projected to go first overall, however he eventually fell to fourth after the Montreal Canadiens opted to go with Juraj Slafkovsky following an MVP performance at the 2022 Winter Olympics, while the New Jersey Devils selected Simon Nemec second overall and the Arizona Coyotes went with Logan Cooley.
Despite dropping to fourth, Wright has worked his way into a full-time role in the National Hockey League relatively quickly, finishing his rookie campaign last year with 19 goals and 44 points in 79 games.
If the Vancouver Canucks were to pursue Shane Wright ahead of the trade deadline, one potential top-six option that Patrik Allvin could move to get him is Jake DeBrusk, who has seen his name mentioned in rumors for the last month ever since he was made a healthy scratch in late December.
In 49 games this season, Wright has registered 17 points (seven goals, ten assists), four penalty minutes and is a minus-one while averaging 13:43 of ice time per night.
