A former Vancouver Canucks and long-time National Hockey League defenseman has landed a major opportunity on the international stage in a little over a month from now.

The National Hockey League's 2025-26 season might only a month old, but we're about to enter a very busy period on the international hockey calendar as not only do we have the 2026 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship and 2025 Spengler Cup next month, in early February, the game's greatest players will return to the Winter Olympics after a 12-year absence.
The Vancouver Canucks are set to be well represented at all three of those international events with Braeden Cootes more than likely to be suiting up for Canada at the World Juniors, Kevin Bieksa is set to be on the panel for the men's hockey tournament at the Olympics, meanwhile at the Spengler Cup, it looks like one of the team's former blueliners has landed a major role with Team Canada.

In a press release on Monday, Hockey Canada announced that former Vancouver Canucks defenseman Marc Bergevin has been named as their General Manager for the 2025 Spengler Cup, which gets underway on Boxing Day in Davos, Switzerland.
Joining Marc Bergevin on Canada's management team is long-time Tampa Bay Lightning executive Stacy Roest, who appeared in six Spengler Cups during his career, captaining the group in 2006 when they finished as runners-up to the hosts, HC Davos.
"Marc and Stacy have extensive experience as executives in the National Hockey League and American Hockey League, and we are excited for them to bring their expertise to Canada's National Men's Team for the 2025 Spengler Cup. They not only bring a wealth of front office experience, but many years of professional and international playing experience, and we look forward to working with them as we build a staff and roster to represent Canada in Switzerland." Senior vice-president of high performance and hockey operations Scott Salmond said.

Bergevin, 60, appeared in close to 1,200 games during his time in the National Hockey League, nine of which game with the Vancouver Canucks in the final season of his 21-year career.
After retiring in 2004, Bergevin turned his attention almost immediately to the management side of hockey, joining the Chicago Blackhawks as a scout in 2005-26 and seven years later, was named General Manager of the Montreal Canadiens, a role he held for parts of ten seasons before being fired and replaced by Kent Hughes.
For the last four seasons, including the current campaign, Bergevin has been serving as a Senior Advisor with the Los Angeles Kings, who hired him shortly after he was let go by the Canadiens.
Canada is set to open up their 2025 Spengler Cup schedule on Friday, December 26th against the U.S. Collegiate Selects at 11:15 a.m. PT on TSN.
