Four Former Vancouver Canucks on Sweden's Quarter Century Team
On Friday morning, with an off-day in the 4 Nations Face-Off, the National Hockey League revealed the Quarter Century Team for Sweden.
Former Vancouver Canucks forwards Henrik and Daniel Sedin were named to the first team, along with
Nicklas Backstrom,
Erik Karlsson, Nicklas Lidstrom and Henrik Lundqvist.
The Vancouver Canucks were able to select twin brothers Daniel and Henrik Sedin as the No. 2 and 3 picks in the 1999 NHL Draft. Each played 17 seasons in the League and are the Canucks' all-time leading scorers; Henrik had 1,070 points (240 goals, 830 assists) in 1,330 games and Daniel 1,041 points (393 goals, 548 assists) in 1,306 games. They retired together on April 2, 2018, and were inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame together in 2022." NHL.com said.
Another two former Vancouver Canucks were named to Sweden's second team on Friday - forward Mats Sundin and goaltender
Jacob Markstrom.
"Sundin, another Hall of Famer (2012), won the Mark Messier Leadership Award in 2008 in his eighth season as the Toronto Maple Leafs captain, and from 2000 onward had 603 points (253 goals, 350 assists) in 624 games with the Maple Leafs and Canucks." NHL.com said.
They added, "In his 15th NHL season, Markstrom is 236-205-62 with a 2.20 GAA, .912 save percentage and 23 shutouts in 521 games with the Florida Panthers, Canucks, Calgary Flames and New Jersey Devils."
All four of the former Vancouver Canucks named to Sweden's Quarter Century Teams are certainly worthy of the honor for both what they've done in the National Hockey League and on the international stage.
Henrik Sedin, Daniel Sedin and Mats Sundin were all teammates at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy where the Swedes won their second-ever gold medal.
The trio have won a combined 17 medals at the men's level internationally, with Sundin taking home three World Championship titles, while the Sedin each have won the tournament once, that came in 2013.
Meanwhile, Jacob Markstrom has represented his nation on numerous occasions, and was supposed to be at the 4 Nations Face-Off, but had to withdraw due to an injury.
Markstrom has won one gold medal and one bronze medal at the IIHF World Championship for Sweden, with his last appearance for Tre Kronor coming in 2019.
Sweden has a big test ahead of them on Saturday afternoon at the 4 Nations Face-Off as they take on Nordic rivals, Finland, at 10 am PT (1pm local) on Sportsnet.
