NHL Player Safety Drops the Hammer on Canucks Defenseman Tyler Myers with Multiple-Game Suspension
In a not so surprising decision, Vancouver Canucks defenseman Tyler Myers has received a multiple-game suspension from the NHL department of player safety for cross-checking Edmonton Oilers' d-man Evan Bouchard.
It has been announced by the Department of Player Safety that both Tyler Myers and Edmonton Oilers captain
Connor McDavid will both get matching punishments and will be suspended 3 games for cross checking.
In their 3-2 win over the Edmonton Oilers on Hockey Night in Canada, both McDavid and Myers were both asses match penalties on the same stoppage.
Myers took exception to Oiler d-man Evan Bouchard and gave him a cross check to the face, which he defends sayin he did not mean to get him that high, but understands the punishment he is getting.
Tyler Myers says he knows the video doesn't look good. Says intent was to hit Bouchard lower but also knows he misfired. Sounds like he's ready to accept his punishment. Acknowledged that Bouchard didn't present a threat in that moment. Just a split second decision that went wrong.
The same went for Connor McDavid, as in a rage of frustration from being held by Canucks forward
Conor Garland, he struck him in the face with a two handed stick.
«With the puck at the half-wall, McDavid turns to face Garland, approaches him, draws back his stick with both hands, and intentionally strikes Garland in the head with force. This is cross-checking,» says the NHL in the explanation video.
Regardless of intent, the NHL's Department of Player Safety gave a clear explanation for their decsion of three games for their actions.
«It's important to note that this is not a case of a stick that is directed toward the body that rides up the opponent. This cross-check is delivered cleanly to the head of Bouchard and while we have heard Myers' assertion that he does not intend to strike Bouchard in this manner, players are responsible for their stick at all times.»
Unfortunately for those who already purchased tickets for their rematch on Thursday, amid the suspension it means that fans wlil not be able to see Connor McDavid and Tyler Myers in action.
Myers will forfeit $46,875.00 of salary where all of the money will go to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.
