After spending the last four seasons in the Ontario Hockey League, a Vancouver Canucks prospect is looking for a new challenge and will be heading to the NCAA.
The new agreement between the Canadian Hockey League and NCAA is great news for junior hockey players that not only want to get a great education at Division 1 school, but also face tougher competition, which will help their development in the long run.
Earlier this week,
it was reported that Vancouver Canucks prospect
Anthony Romani was planning on using that new agreement to head down south to the NCAA and 24 hours later, the move was confirmed.
Anthony Romani commits to NCAA's Michigan State University
Romani took to Instagram on Tuesday to announce his decision to move to Michigan State University where he'll be joining fellow NHL prospects Isaac Howard (Tampa Bay Lightning), Charlie Stramel (Minnesota Wild) and Trey Augustine (Detroit Red Wings).
"🚨 BREAKING 🚨
As rumoured over the last few days, Anthony Romani has officially committed to Michigan State. The 4.5 ⭐️ recruit is a draft pick of the Vancouver Canucks and had 30 points in 29 games with the OHLs Barrie Colts last season." PuckPreps said on X.
In early January, just before the Ontario Hockey League's trade deadline, the North Bay Battalion
dealt Anthony Romani to Barrie, where he joined another Vancouver Canucks prospect,
Riley Patterson, as they looked to help the Colts win their first title since 2000.
Romani put up 30 points (19 goals, 11 assists), six penalty minutes and was a plus-seven in 29 games for the Barrie Colts during the regular season and followed that up with 24 points (12 goals, 12 assists) in 16 games during the playoffs.
The Barrie Colts released a statement following the news of Anthony Romani's commitment to Michigan State University, wishing him all the best in his future endeavors and thanked him for his contributions during his four month stint with the organization.
"The Barrie Colts would like to congratulate Anthony Romani on his commitment to Michigan State University for the 2025-26 season. Romani will forgo his overage year in the OHL as he takes the next step in both his academic and hockey careers." the Colts said.
They added, "The entire Barrie Colts organization would like to thank Anthony for his dedication and contributions. We wish him the very best as he begins his chapter with the Spartans."
At this point, it's too early to say if this will just be a one-year stint with Michigan State or if Anthony Romani plans on spending a few seasons there before turning pro with the Vancouver Canucks organization.
It's also unclear when the Vancouver Canucks would need to sign him by in order to avoid losing his rights.
With players in the Canadian Hockey League, NHL teams have two years, while in the NCAA, it's four years, but there hasn't been any clarity just yet from the National Hockey League on this matter just yet.
