A National Hockey League insider has given an update this week on where things stand between the Vancouver Canucks and pending UFA forward Kiefer Sherwood.

The Vancouver Canucks are going to have a big decision to make in the coming months with forward Kiefer Sherwood, who became eligible to sign a contract extension in the offseason and while preliminary discussions did take place, nothing materialized on that front, with the NHL's single-season hits record holder began the 2025-26 campaign without a new deal.
Sherwood has had an incredible start to the season so far and is undoubtedly Vancouver's MVP to this point, registering 12 goals in 22 games and with his hot streak comes the chance to earn a lot more on his next contract, with some reports suggesting $4-5 million annually, something that the Canucks are hesitant on handing out based on previous contracts gone wrong.
"There's a little bit of hesitancy; he keeps this up he's probably in the $4m maybe $5m range depending on term, I think the Canucks are, or were anyway...weary...allocating those types of cap dollars" David Pagnotta said.

During Thursday's edition of Insider Trading on TSN, National Hockey League insider Darren Dreger gave an update on contract discussions between the Vancouver Canucks and Kiefer Sherwood's camp.
According to Dreger, the two sides have been going back and forth, but there is no guarantee that they'll be able to get a deal done with Sherwood, opening up the door for him to be a trade chip for Patrik Allvin ahead of the deadline on Friday, March 6th.
"There's an amicable back and forth between the Vancouver Canucks and his agent, Judd Moldaver." Dreger said.

He added, "You're talking about a 30-year-old who's had a great first quarter; he's got 12 goals to this point. The problem in Vancouver is the depth they have on the wing. Of course, there's going to be contract discussions and negotiations, but there's no guarantee they're going to extend this guy because of what I just said.

He could become legit trade fodder for the Vancouver Canucks, but that'll happen closer to the trade deadline."

Because of the salary Sherwood could command and the interest he'd likely receive on the open market starting on Canada Day, it wouldn't be a surprise to see Patrik Allvin get ahead of the game and see what he could get for him via trade, if he feels the club can't get a deal done with the Columbus, Ohio native.
"After scoring a career-best 19 goals last season, Sherwood is on pace to smash that total in 2025-26 thanks to a torrid start. He's an excellent skater with a good work ethic - well-suited to disrupt opponents on the forecheck. The Canucks haven't shown any inclination to sign the pending unrestricted free agent to an extension, but signing him with a new contract in place would maximize his trade value." Johnston said.

Sherwood has appeared in 22 games this season for the Canucks, registering 16 points (12 goals, four assists), 16 penalty minutes and is a minus-three.
