Vancouver Canucks Goalie Thatcher Demko Breathes A Major Sigh of Relief In Post Game Comments After First Win
Vancouver Canucks Goalie Thatcher Demko notched his first win of the season against the Colorado Avalanche last night, and his post-game comments revealed a visible sense of relief.
After going down with a knee injury during last years playoff run, Thatcher Demko has been doing everything in his power to get back on the ice and be the Vezina caliber goalie we fans are used to seeing.
Demko missed the first two months of the season recovering from a knee injury he suffered in Game 1 of the first round of the playoffs against the Nashville Predators. The 29-year-old had a career-high 35 wins, five shutouts, 2.45 goals-against average, and .918 save percentage in 51 games in 2023-24. - TSN
Even though rusty in his first few starts back, it has been a disappointing to see Demko struggle like he has.
With Kevin Lankinen still out with the flu, Demko made his 3rd start of the season, and 2nd consecutive when they faced off against the Colorado Avalanche last night.
He really looked like his old self all game long and narrowly missed a shut out by just 46 seconds as Avs forward Valeri Nichushkin got one past him.
The 29-year-old netminder stopped 30 out of 31 shots faced and earned his first win on the year.
Thatcher Demko Relieved after nothing first win of the season against the Colorado Avalanche
It hasn't been an easy return to the Vancouver Canucks for Thatcher Demko, and after finally getting the first win under his belt, his post-game comments depicted a major sense of relief.
«Big one for me,» said Demko postgame. «Certainly wouldn't have liked 0-3 my first three back.»
Even his Avs netminder counter part, Mackenzie Blackwood gave major praise to Demko for being able to look that sharp after being out that long with a serious injury.
«[Demko] played well, credit where credit is due, but I think we got to not accept not scoring and try to find a way no matter what,» Blackwood said. «He's a good goalie, been battling through some adversity there, but obviously the game aside I'm happy he can come back and play this year.»
