Patrick Allvin and Jim Rutherford have made it very clear they are looking to make the Vancouver Canucks a lot younger, and they want a hybrid retool, but it hasn't stopped them from offering 30 year old Kiefer Sherwood another contract.
"However as we inch closer to the trade deadline, teams that are currently in a playoff position or are at least in the mix for a spot will probably check in with the Vancouver Canucks about Kiefer Sherwood as he's exactly the type of player you need in the postseason - skill, speed and a ton of physicality."-Jaxon
Vancouver Canucks trying hard to retain Kiefer Sherwood.
Tyson Cole of Canucks Army writes, while it may be in the Canucks' interest to get younger, they want to keep Sherwood, and it makes sense, he has the perfect mentality you'd want to pass on to younger players. He plays a fearless game, combining goal-scoring with physicality.
"Sherwood, 30, signed a two-year, $1.5 million AAV contract with the Canucks in the summer of 2024. In his first year in Vancouver, Sherwood had a career high of 19 goals and 40 points in 78 games. He also set the NHL record for hits in a single season with 462. Through 40 games of the 2025-26 season, Sherwood is on pace to set new career highs. He is currently on pace for 34 goals and 42 points, while seeing his time on ice jump two-and-a-half minutes from last season's averages."-Cole
The Canucks need to change their identity along with their players during this retool. A more physical, rugged style of game goes a long way, especially in the playoffs, and that is what Sherwood embodies. It's similar to the mentality of the Florida Panthers, and they have had plenty of success exercising it. The Canucks need to head into that direction too.
