Vancouver Canucks' Jim Rutherford Breaks Silence on Whether or Not Team Needs to Rebuild
Vancouver Canucks President of Hockey Operations Jim Rutherford has broken his silence recently about whether or not he thinks the team needs to rebuild.
Amid their tough start to the 2025-26 season, many have been wondering if it's time for the Vancouver Canucks to officially start over and enter a rebuild, something that certainly isn't easy and doesn't always work - just ask the Buffalo Sabres.
The topic of a rebuild came up when Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin was a guest on After Hours with Scott Oake & Iain MacIntyre and he didn't seem too interested in going through one and doesn't believe one can happen with guys like Brock Boeser, Elias Pettersson and Quinn Hughes, among others, on their roster.
"Well I don't think you can do that when you have good players in Quinn Hughes, Demko, Elias Pettersson, Brock Boeser, and then the next wave of young players in Willander Pettersson, Mancini, Lekkerimäki. Very excited to have Braeden Cootes playing well in Seattle. I think he had a six point game tonight against the Giants. And we have Medvedev the goalie [with the] London Knights." Allvin said.
He added, "So I think we're prepared well for it. Obviously you don't want to put young players in a position to fail in the National Hockey League, but I do see a lot of growth. And another guy Aatu Räty here getting big minutes and took a key faceoff in the end [of the game] here. He's another guy who's just going to grow again."

Vancouver Canucks' Jim Rutherford gives his opinion on whether or not team needs to rebuild
During a recent interview with Sportsnet's Iain MacIntyre, Vancouver Canucks President of Hockey Operations Jim Rutherford was non-committal on the team potentially entering a rebuild in the near future, but says that they take time and aren't always successful.
Rutherford added that the team is in a transition period right now and doesn't believe trading some of their top guys for draft picks that may or may not end up playing in the National Hockey League one day is something they want to do at this time.
"Rebuilds can work. But you have to understand rebuilds take a long time. There has to be a lot of patience, and for the teams that take the biggest jump and ultimately rebuild and win a Cup, they usually have a first-overall pick. And you still have to get lucky on that. I'm not naming teams, but some have tried a rebuild and had a ton of draft picks that didn't turn out. So a rebuild is not something that we're going to look at doing. Like I said, we're in transition. But we're not trading all these players for draft picks that may or may not end up playing someday." Rutherford said.
It's easy to see why the Canucks' front office is shutting down rumors of a rebuild right now as they still believe this team has a shot at making it back to the Stanley Cup Playoffs in the spring, if things go in their favour over the next couple of months.
However, if the Canucks continue to trend in the wrong direction and don't believe they'll be able to get Quinn Hughes locked up long-term next summer then there's no way this organization can not continue with the status quo and not rebuild.
