Vancouver Canucks just made a monumental mistake with Captain Quinn Hughes
After a recent report and comments made by Vancouver Canucks president Jim Rutherford, it appears that they made a monumental mistake with their captain and MVP Quinn Hughes.
Amid a disastrous season for the Canucks filled with drama, injuries and speculation, a new issue has surfaced for the team as recent comments made by Jim Rutherford about the future of Quinn Hughes in Vancouver has been called into question.
Jim Rutherford made a mistake with Quinn Hughes with his comments about a potential trade
At the end of the year press conference when President of hockey operations Jim Rutherford and General Manager Patrik Allvin cleared the air on all the issues that surrounding the Vancouver Canucks this season, the soundbites were lying left right and center.
The one that the caught the ears of the media and fans is when Rutherford disclosed that re-signing Quinn Hughes once his contract expires in 2027 will prove to be harder than expected, as it may not come down to money for him.
"It may not boil down to money with [Quinn],» Rutherford said. «He said before he wants to play with his brothers. That would be partly out of our control. In our control if we brought his brothers here." - Rutherford
It is public knowledge that Hughes wants to play with his brothers Luke and Jack one day, and because they are apart of the New Jersey Devils, speculation has already started to mount.
Now, it has reached a new level as Rutherford made more comments today that indicate they are already thinking about "Doomsday" where if they cant reach an extension before his contract is up, then the trade will be inevitable.
"We control him for a year and two-thirds because if we get to that trade deadline two years from now and it looks like he doesn't want to stay, then we would have to do something." Rutherford said.
The major mistake has been because the door for a potential trade has now been opened and now every media outlet and story for the next two seasons is going to be related to the rumors surrounding his exit.
The media and PR has already been a nightmare for the organization, and this is only going to add more fuel to the fire so to speak.
