Vancouver Canucks Urged to Hand PTO Lifeline to 26-Year-Old Winger with Strong Upside

Training camp is right around the corner for the Vancouver Canucks and while there's a good chance that we might not see a big addition before the players hit the ice in Penticton on September 18th, there's always a possibility that Patrik Allvin could go down the professional tryout (PTO) route.

Vancouver had two players in camp on professional tryouts last September, one of them was former Stanley Cup champion Sammy Blais, who was already under contract in the AHL with Abbotsford, as well as goaltender Dylan Ferguson, who was released from his PTO just a few days after Patrik Allvin signed Kevin Lankinen.

The Canucks don't have a ton of open spots on their roster heading into training camp, meaning that free agents that have to go down that PTO route might look elsewhere if there isn't a path to the NHL in Vancouver, but there are still a handful of names that Allvin & Co. could take a look at signing to a tryout in the coming weeks.

In a recent article for Heavy.com, Michael DeRosa mentions unrestricted free agent forward Brett Leason as a possible PTO option for the Vancouver Canucks.

DeRosa believes that because the club traded away Dakota Joshua earlier this summer, Leason could come in and provide some size and physicality to the team's lineup.

Leason, a native of Calgary, Alberta, was a second round pick of the Washington Capitals in 2019, but has spent the last three seasons with the Anaheim Ducks, finishing the 2024-25 campaign with 17 points (five goals, 12 assists) in 62 games.

While Leason's size and physicality are certainly two attractive attributes for any team that could be in the market for a forward, but given the logjam the Vancouver Canucks have, especially in the bottom-six, it seems more likely than not that they'll pass on Brett Leason, while continuing their search for a second line centerman.
