Elias Pettersson has grown into the superstar player the Canucks needed. His evolution led him to tally nothing less than 102 points shattering personal records and reaching the 100-point mark for the first time since Daniel Sedin.
Pettersson will be eligible for a contract extension as soon as July 1st of this year and this will be the Canucks' top priority. He'll be seeing the end of a 3-year deal worth over $22M, just a year being eligible for full autonomy on free agency.
His agent J.P Barry was on Donnie and Dhali earlier and offered comparisons with Mar Barzal (8 years x $9.15M) and Matthew Tkachuk ( x ) who are both very impactful players for their teams:
On the positive side of things, Pettersson's clan is ready for business as they've clearly stated that they were open for a meeting:
‘'Might need a face-to-face, I expect Pat and I will meet with them, maybe at a neutral site. We need to talk, this will be a significant deal.''
This will obviously be a record contract for the franchise based on the comparables drawn up, if the Canucks manage to get him under contract for less than $80M it could very well turn out to be a steal.
Pettey's offensive game displays at least the same upside as Barzal's, it's actually his defensive game that's a thing of wonder. Pettey's best comparable as a high-end offensive producer and a defensive ace probably sits in the line of Aleksander Barkov whose AAV stands at $10M.
This Swede clearly represents the future of this franchise, question remains, will they take care of this deal as they did with Horvat's?
