Luke Schenn, new name in the NHL record book
Luke Schenn establishes a new mark for most hits by a defenseman surpassing Brooks Orpik.
The right-handed blue liner is now atop in the hits column for a defenseman. In last night's game against the Coyotes, Schenn recorded 6 hits. It now adds up to a grand total of 2947-career hits.
Over his 16-year career, Brooks Orpik had delivered an impresive 2946 hits and it stood as the record for two and half years after he retired.
Schenn broke the record when he completed a hit on former teammate Jakob Chychrun. He commented the matter:
"He was my D partner when he first came into the league as an 18-year-old, and we spent a good portion of the year together. Before overtime, I thanked him for that skating into my corner there on the power play. We had a good chuckle about it."
Schenn's record will likely hold for a while since the closest active player is Radko Gudas who's compiled 2348 hits so far, 599 behind the new record holder.
