The Flames have had quite the agitated 2022-2023 season. From the trading a franchise winger, to changing the whole front office and coaching staff, Calgary has seen it all this year.

A good portion of their players are going to need contract extensions by the of the 2023-2024 campaign including who was presumably taking over the team's captainship, Mikael Backlund.
The veteran revealed to a journalist back home that he didn't want to sign an extension and was ready to get traded:
Backlund, 34, will be entering the last year of a contract that gave an annual $5.35M. The Swede just came off a career high season in which he collected 56 points in 82 games. Due to his experience and his two-way game, he could wind up being one of the hottest trade targets heading into next season.
