A former National Hockey League forward has sadly passed away at the age of 61 this on Thursday after a battle with an illness.

The hockey world continues to mourn the passing of those we've lost in 2025 thus far, including former first-round pick Miika Elomo.
Sadly, we have news to share on Friday morning on the passing of a former National Hockey League forward.

Former Buffalo Sabres forward Claude Verret passes away

On Thursday, it was announced by Swiss media outlet Le Matin that former Buffalo Sabres forward Claude Verret has passed away this week at the age of 61 after dealing with an illness.
Verret's career began in the QMJHL where he was a star for the now-defunct Trois-Rivieres Draveurs, registering a whopping 462 points in 200 regular season games.
The Lachine, Quebec native was drafted in the eighth round, 163rd overall by the Buffalo Sabres in 1982 and went on to appear in 14 games for them between the 1983-84 and 1984-85 seasons.
Buffalo's American Hockey League affiliate, the Rochester Americans, who Verret won a Calder Cup with in 1987, released a statement yesterday where they announced that they'll be holding a moment of silence ahead of puck drop tonight against the Providence Bruins.
"The Rochester Americans join the rest of the hockey community in mourning the loss of former Amerk and Calder Cup champion Claude Verret, who passed away Thursday at the age of 61.

A moment of silence will be observed prior to Friday's game against Providence in honor of his memory.

The entire Amerks organization extends its deepest sympathies to his friends and family during this difficult time." the Americans said.

After winning the Calder Cup in 1987, Verret then headed overseas to Europe where he'd spend the final 11 seasons of his professional career, suiting up for Rouen in France, along with Lausanne HC and Geneve-Servette HC in Switzerland.
Lausanne HC, where Verret played four seasons including his final one in 1999-00 released a statement on his passing, adding that they'll be paying tribute to him ahead of a game in the 2025-25 season.
Note: the following quote is translated from French

"It is with great sadness that the Lausanne Hockey Club learned of the death of its former Canadian forward Claude Verret.

Our thoughts are with his family, his loved ones, and all those who were lucky enough to know him. Thank you, Claude, for these unforgettable moments.

In recognition of his immense contribution to the club's history, the LHC will pay him a special tribute before a match at the start of next season." Lausanne HC said.

The thoughts of everyone here at Canucks Daily are with the family, friends and former teammates of Claude Verret at this difficult time.
