Insider confirms it for Mitch Marner and future with the Maple Leafs
The Toronto Maple Leafs made a big splash over the weekend by hiring Craig Berube as their new head coach, but according to Frank Seravalli, the franchise's activity will not end.
On The DFO Rundown podcast, Frank Seravalli said he expects "massive changes" after the Leafs' latest hire.
How massive?
The insider says he sees a 95% that the Leafs will trade Mitch Marner this offseason.
I think there's a 5% or less chance that Mitch Marner is back... there's a lot of teams sitting here now thinking 'can we get Mitch Marner for cheap?'
It could be a complicated trade, as Marner has a full NMC and a nearly $11 million cap hit that expires at the end of next season.
The DFO Rundown hosts wondered whether a deal would need to include a new contract, and Seravalli implied that his contract status and poor playoff performance would have several teams trying to get him at a discount.
Seravalli says despite Marner's lacklustre play in the playoffs; there's a good chance he'll be getting a similar or even bigger contract, as he says players get paid for their regular season performances, not playoffs.
While a new coach will be a significant change for the Leafs organization, there's more important still to come.
