Dave Tomlinson comments on the opportunity to call Canucks games: Honouring John Garrett's legacy
The Vancouver Canucks opened their preseason schedule on Sunday night, and while it didn't go as the team expected, fans at home got their first taste of the post-John Garrett era.
With Sportsnet carrying Sunday's game Dave Tomlinson was in the booth doing colour commentary duties for the first time. While being interviewed by Dan Murphy, Tomlinson said that being able to be on the broadcast for Canucks games is his "dream job."
"After finishing hockey, I wanted to get into sports broadcasting and be a colour guy; I thought that would be fun. But my dream job was doing colour for the Vancouver Canucks on TV. I say, dream big, kids, dream big; it can happen." Tomlinson said.
Tomlinson, 54, spent most of his professional hockey career in Germany. He also played 42 NHL games for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Winnipeg Jets and Florida Panthers and retired following the 2005-06 season.
The North Vancouver native will be on the majority of Canucks broadcasts during the 2023-24 season, with another former NHLer, Ray Ferraro, being involved in roughly 20 games also as colour commentator.
It wasn't going to be easy trying to find a replacement for John Garrett, who's a legend in the city of Vancouver, but it appears that the Canucks and Sportsnet have two great ones in Dave Tomlinson and Ray Ferraro. To see two guys living the dream of taking over from the memorable Cheech is the best way to honour his legacy.
