LATEST | Massive development regarding the Ethan Bear sweepstakes: Canucks no longer in the running?
Up until two weeks ago, it almost seemed like a certainty that the Canucks would be inking their former Defenseman Ethan Bear.
The latest developments suggest that a massive change of pace has occured, it was reported earlier this week that the Canucks were no longer the favorites. Satiar Shah added this afternoon that they were no longer in the running:
'Looks like the Canucks are getting priced out of the Ethan Bear sweepstakes.
The free agent defenseman has interest from a number of teams but doesn't seem like Vancouver will be part of a bidding war.''
Elliotte Friedman had made it known that Bear's intentions were clear and that Allvin and the Canucks were definitely the team to beat.
Dhaliwal added on Shah's statement and even stated that the Canucks were extremely active and that they were looking all over to add another Defenseman:
'As I said yesterday, a week ago I thought the Canucks were the frontrunners to land him,
I don't get that feeling anymore.
The competition for Bear has driven the price up.
Bear isn't the only dee Van is looking at, they are looking all over for defensemen.''
The fact that Bear could no longer be an option for the Canucks presents as both good and bad news. On the plus side, the Canucks will have an opportunity to aim for a legitimate top four Defenseman and could be looking at a much bigger target.
On the other hand, it also means that they'll have to give up cap space and assets to acquire a bigger fish. The next few days are certainly going to be critical in the development of this saga.
