NHL set to take serious disciplinary action against the Vancouver Canucks over tampering allegations
The Vancouver Canucks are in the middle of a controversy as President Jim Rutherford's latest comments may warrant serious disciplinary action from the National Hockey League.
Vancouver Canucks could face punishment from NHL due to tampering allegations
There are too many head turning answers that both general manager Patrik Allvin and President Rutherford gave in the media scrum, but one that stook out had to due with Captain
Quinn Hughes' future with the Canucks.
Rutherford disclosed that Hughes has expressed his strong desire to play with his brothers Luke and Jack one day, who are both members of
the New Jersey Devils.
«It may not boil down to money with [Quinn],» Rutherford said. «He said before he wants to play with his brothers. That would be partly out of our control. In our control if we brought his brothers here.» - Rutherford
It was the following comments in which things got dicey.
Rutherford stated light heartedly that they maybe will attempt to bring Jack and
Luke Hughes over to Vancouver in order to give their captain everything he wants, but this teeters against against the league's rules on tampering.
"He said before he wants to play with his brothers. That would be partly out of our control. In our control if we brought his brothers here." - Rutherford
For those who do not know, tampering is a serious offense in the eyes of the league.
In it's purest form, tampering means either an executive, manager or player is talking to another player under contract of another organization and making the effort to persuade them to join their team.
Even Rutherford came out later to indicate his comments were not meant to be taken that way, and that he needs to be careful when addressing this issue as it can easily boil down to tampering.
«Well, we've got to be careful with tampering, so we'll just leave it at that,» said Rutherford when a reporter followed up on bringing the two other Hughes brothers to Vancouver. «I probably crossed the line, anyway.»
At the end of the day, that league will be looking into these comments to see if there was any real wrongdoing.
The matter can escalate as well if the New Jersey Devils decide to take this to the league and force their hand, but only time will tell the outcome of these comments.
