One way that the Vancouver Canucks can keep captain Quinn Hughes around on a long-term basis has been revealed, but it could be tough for Patrik Allvin & Co.
It's been a summer full of rumors regarding Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes, who has two years remaining on his contract with the club and is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent on Canada Day 2027.
Vancouver Canucks President of Hockey Operations Jim Rutherford
shared with reporters back in April that there it's a real possibility their captain could leave, adding that it could come down to wanting to play with his brothers Jack and Luke of the New Jersey Devils over money and term.
While Vancouver Canucks fans may be worrying about the possibility of Quinn Hughes leaving, there's nothing to stress about at this time as the captain is focused on helping his club bounce back this year and hopefully return to the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Reporter shares how Vancouver Canucks can increase the odds of Quinn Hughes staying long-term
In an article on The Athletic last week, reporter James Mirtle spoke about Quinn Hughes' future with the Vancouver Canucks and if/when the club may have to start thinking about a possible trade involving the 25-year-old blueliner.
According to Mirtle, he believes the Vancouver Canucks can increase their odds of convincing Quinn Hughes to stick around long-term if they're able to bounce back this season, which would more than likely involve a deep playoff run.
However Mirtle cautioned that if that doesn't happen and the Canucks somehow miss the Stanley Cup Playoffs again, Patrik Allvin will need to begin to ponder about his captain's future and what a trade involving him could look like at some point before the deadline in the 2026-27 season.
"Maybe Vancouver surprises and has a huge bounce-back season that convinces their captain to stay. Feels unlikely to me, to be honest, but that's their best-case scenario. Otherwise, they have to start contemplating what a blockbuster trade might look like and whether it's all about futures." Mirtle said.
Mirtle isn't the only reporter/insider that believes the Vancouver Canucks will have to make a decision regarding Quinn Hughes' future probably at some point in 2026, as Elliotte Friedman
shared in June that he believes the team is "on the clock."
"Elliotte Friedman: Canucks are "absolutely" on the clock when it comes to Quinn Hughes; Hughes is going to start saying "I don't want to be somewhere where I'm not gonna win" at some point" NHL Rumour Report shared on X in June.
For now, the Vancouver Canucks can only control what they can control and that's working their tails off in training camp to prepare themselves for a bounce back year in 2025-26.
If all goes well, they can make it back to the Stanley Cup Playoffs and maybe by then there will be a glimmer of hope and a chance that Quinn Hughes will want to remain with the organization long-term.
