A former Vancouver Canucks trade target has reportedly been made available by the New York Rangers as we head further into the offseason for both teams.
As the Vancouver Canucks continue to evaluate their options on the trade market heading into the summer, with a need for a second line centerman and a top-six winger, Patrik Allvin and the team's management group could circle back to one of their targets from earlier in the year.
Back in early December,
reports began to circulate about Vancouver's interest in New York Rangers forward
Chris Kreider, with Rick Dhaliwal of
Donnie & Dhali saying that Patrik Allvin called to inquire about the former first round pick.
"Someone told me the Canucks called the Rangers about Chris Kreider. But my guess is Vancouver is probably on Kreider's no-trade list - he's got a healthy one, I think, 15 teams. Rangers sent out feelers that Kreider and [Jacob] Trouba were available, so every team called, including the Canucks." Dhaliwal said.
New York Rangers reportedly make Chris Kreider available for trade
The New York Rangers, like the Vancouver Canucks, will have a new Head Coach behind the bench this fall and both teams are hoping that this season is a fluke and that in 2025-26, they'll be able to return to the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
While each team has different areas they need to address over the offseason, it looks like the New York Rangers are willing to move on from their longest-tenured player - Chris Kreider.
In an article on the New York Post, Larry Brooks is reporting that there is a mutual feeling between the New York Rangers and Chris Kreider that after 13 full seasons together, a fresh start is needed this summer.
"There is a strong sense that the feeling is mutual and that after 13 years with the organization, Kreider recognizes that the relationship has run its course and that he needs a fresh start." Brooks said.
Kreider has been with the New York Rangers organization since they drafted him 19th overall in 2009 and officially joined them for the 2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs after three seasons with Boston College.
Despite the reports of him potentially leaving the Rangers this summer, Kreider expressed his desire to remain in New York during his season-ending media availability last month.
"This is home for me. This is the organization that gave me an opportunity to live out my dream. I've developed so many incredible relationships and grown up and spent so much time in this area. So, obviously, this is where I want to be and this is the group that I want to help in whatever fashion win hockey games." Kreider said.
The Boxford, Massachusetts native has two years remaining on his contract with a cap hit of $6.5 million annually, as well as a modified no-trade clause.
After a disappointing season in 2024-25, which saw his production drop by 45 points after putting up 22 goals and eight assists this year, it's unclear if Chris Kreider will be able to return to being a 50+ point player, which could scare off potential buyers, including the Vancouver Canucks, this summer.
