A former NHL General Manager believes that forward Elias Pettersson could be a buyout candidate next summer if he isn't able to turn his game around.

As everyone knows by now, it's been a difficult start to the 2025-26 season for Vancouver Canucks forward Elias Pettersson, as he's registered one assist and one shot-on-goal in the team's first three games.
Pettersson knows it's been a rough start and acknowledged that to the media recently saying that he has to be better as the team begins a five-game road trip tonight in Dallas.
"Oh for sure. I want to have three shots a game or even more, but maybe that's a reflection that we need to create a little more, I need to be better." Pettersson said.

When asked if he's seeing things his line and team can build on, he added, "Oh for sure, we have, obviously I think as a line we've been creating some chances, but I don't think it's been there consistently all the time, but yeah working on. We had a good practice today I felt."

Ex-NHL GM believes Elias Pettersson could be buyout candidate if he can't turn things around

This week, former National Hockey League General Manager and now TSN Director of Scouting Craig Button was a guest on Donnie & Dhali where he discussed the team's start to the 2025-26 season.
During his appearance on the show, Button said that he thinks if Elias Pettersson isn't able to turn things around and has another poor season, that he could potentially be a buyout candidate.
"I'll say this right now guys, if he doesn't get his game in order, we are going to be talking about him as a buyout candidate." Button said.
Hopefully it doesn't get to that point and Elias Pettersson does end up finding his groove once again, but if he happens to have another poor season with under 50 points, then it's something Patrik Allvin and the Canucks' management group may have to consider.
According to According to PuckPedia, if the Vancouver Canucks were to buyout the remainder of Elias Pettersson's contract, it will cost them $2,155,556 annually for the next 12 NHL seasons and even with the salary cap set to rise substantially in the years to come, having $2.15 million of dead cap space on the books isn't ideal.
