General Manager Patrik Allvin Suddenly Steps Away from Vancouver Canucks' Hockey Operations Decisions
An NHL insider has revealed who has more control in the Vancouver Canucks' front office when it comes to decision making including trades and signings.
June and July are typically the busiest months of the year for front offices around the National Hockey League with the Entry Draft and the start of free agency just a few days apart.
The management groups of these teams will be figuring out who they'd like to target, whether that be in free agency or through a trade
in order to upgrade their roster and when it comes to the draft, the General Manager usually has the final say, while getting significant input from their scouting staff.
NHL insider Frank Seravalli reveals who has more control with Vancouver Canucks
For a team like the Vancouver Canucks, they have a lot of big decisions to make in the offseason as they search for a
second line centerman, along with potentially a top-six winger too if
Brock Boeser leaves as a free agent on Canada Day.
One would assume that General Manager Patrik Allvin has a big say in what goes on with signings and trades, but it appears that his involvement in the final decisions is quite minimal.
During an appearance on Sportsnet 650 radio in Vancouver, NHL insider Frank Seravalli revealed that Jim Rutherford, the team's President of Hockey Operations, has almost full control in all decisions made, with General Manager Patrik Allvin and other staff giving their input.
"According to Seravalli, Jim Rutherford is making all the hockey ops decision behind the scenes with only «input» from Allvin and their staff." BuckFoston said on X.
It's not entirely surprising how much of a say Jim Rutherford has - he is the President of Hockey Operations after all, but if what Frank Seravalli says is true, then it's a bit of a shock that Patrik Allvin only gives his input on team decisions.
Given that Jim Rutherford is getting up there in age, as he turned 76 back in February, it wouldn't be a shock is more decisions in the coming years are made by Patrik Allvin.
Regardless, Jim Rutherford and Patrik Allvin has formed a pretty solid front office in Vancouver and, as any management group does, has made their fair share of great decision and poor decisions and it's going to be interesting to see what the duo has in store this summer to improve their NHL roster.
