Jake Debrusk reveals why he chose to sign with the Canucks
Canucks forward Jake DeBrusk says his gut was telling him to join Vancouver despite receiving several other offers when the free agent market opened on Canada Day.
Jake DeBrusk was a guest on a recent edition of the Cam & Strick podcast and discussed his experience on the opening day of free agency and signing a long-term contract with the Vancouver Canucks.
He told the Cam & Strick podcast that he received a lot of offers during the opening of free agency, but he had a powerful feeling, and his gut was telling him to sign in Vancouver with the Canucks.
"There were a lot of offers," DeBrusk said.
He added, "Honestly, I wanted to hear them all out. It was my first free agency, and they were good offers; some were getting close to what I wanted. But in saying that, Vancouver hit everything on the head, so it was kind of hard to compete with that deal."
"I was feeling strong; my gut was telling me Vancouver."
The former Bruins first-round pick went on to say that when the Canucks reached out to him, he knew that they were pretty much the frontrunners to land him. DeBrusk said it felt like Christmas, and he's happy it worked out this way, with him signing in Vancouver.
"Vancouver reached out, and I knew they were pretty much the frontrunners going into free agency," DeBrusk said.
He added, "I felt like it was Christmas. At the same time, you never know if anything will change. It's a lot of unknown, so I'm happy it worked out that way."
DeBrusk, 27, registered 40 points (19 goals, 21 assists), 18 penalty minutes and was a plus-four in 80 regular season games with the Boston Bruins in 2023-24. He went on to add 11 points (five goals, six assists) in 13 games during the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
