A former first overall pick could be an option for Patrik Allvin and the Vancouver Canucks this summer as they'll likely examine the trade market for help in their top-six forward group.
With Jim Rutherford
promising last week that the team will be aggressive this summer, it could lead to a very interesting offseason for the Vancouver Canucks, with a number of different possibilities for the team through free agency and trade.
"We'll be aggressive," Jim Rutherford said.
He added, "If we can make a deal and do whatever we need to do to improve our team, we're going to do it."
Former first overall pick emerges as potential target for Patrik Allvin
Over the four to five weeks leading up to the National Hockey League's Entry Draft, followed by the opening of free agency, rumors will be flying regarding potential players the Vancouver Canucks could target.
Patrik Allvin has
already been linked to several players over the last little while including
Trevor Zegras of the Anaheim Ducks and now, the Vancouver Canucks could target a former first overall pick.
In a recent article on Daily Hive, Noah Strang mentioned a few trade targets for the Vancouver Canucks this summer and one of those players brought up is 2020 first overall pick Alexis Lafreniere, who is with the New York Rangers.
"Lafreniere scored 28 goals and 57 points in 82 games across the 2023-24 season with little power-play time. He's shown the potential of being a high-end top-six play driver but hasn't put it all together yet. Could Vancouver be the place where he does so? He would definitely be expensive in terms of acquisition price but has the potential to be a star." Strang said.
The Vancouver Canucks have shown interest in Alexis Lafreniere in the past,
going back to January 2023 and the rumors of the former first overall pick's potential departure from The Big Apple haven't stopped, but it's unclear if the Rangers are willing to give up on him just yet.
Lafreniere, 23, hasn't lived up to the hype that comes with being a first overall pick in the National Hockey League, with 57 points in 2023-24 being his career-high through years with the New York Rangers.
The Saint-Eustache, Quebec native certainly has the potential of being a solid top-six forward, but it looks like he needs a fresh start elsewhere.
With Brock Boeser's time with the Canucks likely coming to a close, Lafreniere could be a fit in Vancouver, but as Strang says, it'll be expensive to acquire him, there's no doubt about that.
