Now, after his second-worst season of his career and a highly publicized drama that plagued Vancouver's 2024-25 season, the Canucks can lo linger just trade him out of the blue due to his no-move clause officially kicking in on July 1st.
But, if the right trade piece comes to the surface, the Canucks may do their best to convince Pettersson to waive his no-trade in order to get a better fit in their top-6.
Now, Jeff Marek has explored that exact idea, proposing a blockbuster deal on his latest show, revealing that he'd love to see the team try and acquire Mat Barzal by using EP40 and sending him to Long Island.
With that being said, a hypothetical trade proposal made by Jeff Marek has come to light that involves sending Elias Pettersson to the New York Islanders for Mathew Barzal.
"Barzal to Vancouver for Elias Pettersson. Pettersson-Horvat up the gut."

ventured into hypothetical territory, wondering what it might look like if Mathew Barzal ended up back home in Vancouver 👀
Although an intriguing proposition, the trade does not seem to make a whole lot of sense for the Canucks as Mathew Barzal has significantly underperformed in his time with Long Island, and given that EP40 is unlikely to waive his no-move.
