An NHL insider has revealed what it could cost the New Jersey Devils to acquire Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes with two years to go until he becomes a free agent.

In the last 12 months, the Vancouver Canucks organization has gone from being one win away from the Western Conference Final to missing the Stanley Cup Playoffs and questioning the future of their captain Quinn Hughes.
Last month when meeting with reporters, Vancouver Canucks President of Hockey Operations Jim Rutherford spoke about the possibility of losing Quinn Hughes, who he said has expressed his desire to play with his brothers at some point in his NHL career.

Insider shares what New Jersey Devils may have to trade to land Quinn Hughes

The Vancouver Canucks are in no rush to trade Quinn Hughes, although Jim Rutherford admitted late last week that if they get to the deadline during the 2026-27 season and Hughes doesn't want to sign, then they'll "have to do something".
"We control him for a year and two-thirds because if we get to that trade deadline two years from now and it looks like he doesn't want to stay, then we would have to do something." Rutherford said.

If the New Jersey Devils were to step up this summer and wanted to bring Quinn Hughes to the club to unite him with his brothers Jack and Luke, what could a realistic trade look like?
During an interview on Sekeres and Price, NHL insider Jeff Marek says that a Quinn Hughes trade with the New Jersey Devils would likely start with either captain Nico Hischier or Swedish forward Jesper Bratt, along with other assets.
"If you're the New Jersey Devils, you're probably looking at...again, this is sort of under the umbrella of make sure that you don't pay too much. He said you're probably looking at Dougie Hamilton plus Simon Nemec. If you're New Jersey, that's what you're trying to pay for someone like Quinn Hughes." Marek said.

He added, "Meanwhile, if you're the Vancouver Canucks, you're saying to the New Jersey Devils, this guy is a Norris Trophy winner and a perennial candidate for the Norris Trophy.

If you want Quinn Hughes two years early, the conversation stars with either Nico Hischier or Jesper Bratt, plus. Then we start talking about prospects and we start talking about picks and he said, that's what your standoff is.

Right now, there's no real pressure point we have to get this done right now. That's what you're looking at and those are probably the types of names that you would look at involved in a deal like this from both sides."
Now, while the Vancouver Canucks would like to keep Quinn Hughes no matter what and want him to sign a long-term extension, if the captain is adamant about leaving and wants to play in New Jersey, Nico Hischier or Jepser Bratt would be a great addition to the lineup.
Beyond that, when it comes to prospects in the Devils system, one name to keep an eye on is Finnish winger Lenni Hameenaho, who just had 20 goals and 51 points as a 20-year-old in Liiga.
It seems pretty unlikely that a Quinn Hughes trade will happen this summer, unless Patrik Allvin is blown away by an offer that would not only help the Vancouver Canucks next season, but in the near and long-term future too.
