A scenario has emerged that would see the Vancouver Canucks trading away their captain Quinn Hughes, who has been the subject of rumours this summer.

In less than two years, Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent and could potentially leave the club as of July 1st, 2027, if the two sides are unable to agree to terms on a contract extension.
Ever since Jim Rutherford admitted that there's a possibility Hughes could leave the club, saying it may not come down to money or term with him, rumors have been swirling about his future in British Columbia.
The one team that has been linked to Quinn Hughes is the New Jersey Devils, whose roster features his brothers, Jack and Luke, but how realistic is a potential trade involving the Canucks captain.

Scenario emerges that would see Vancouver Canucks consider trading Quinn Hughes

In an article for Pucks and Pitchforks recently, Nick Villano took a look at one scenario that could see the Vancouver Canucks move on from their captain and undoubtedly the best defenseman the franchise has ever seen.
One possible way the Vancouver Canucks could trade Quinn Hughes as early as the trade deadline in March 2026 is if the team were to free fall and be well out of the Stanley Cup Playoff picture, as in a bottom-five team in the NHL, by then, Villano believes.
"It's questionable at best. If the Canucks tank in the standings, would they move Quinn Hughes? We have to believe they will. Whether it's Hughes pushing the issue or the Canucks seeing the writing on the wall and prioritizing the value, Quinn Hughes could provide them the type of trade value that sets them up for the next decade." Villano said.

He added, "The Canucks would have to be dreadful for this move to happen. We're talking worse than last season."

Again, trading Quinn Hughes would be the absolute last thing the Vancouver Canucks' management group will consider doing as they'd love to lock him up to a long-term extension as early as Canada Day 2026, with the potential the potential for an eight-year deal available to them until September 15th, 2026, when the new CBA kicks in.
Vancouver Canucks fans shouldn't be too concerned or lose sleep about this as the odds of the team being one of the worst in the National Hockey League is very unlikely and they should be pushing for a spot in the postseason after trading for Evander Kane, re-signing Brock Boeser and having guys like Elias Pettersson, Thatcher Demko, Filip Chytil and others back at full health.
