NHL reportedly getting closer to an agreement for the 2026 Winter Olympics
The National Hockey League and the Players Association are reportedly getting closer to an agreement for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy.
Hockey fans can rejoice as we're getting closer and closer to an agreement that would see National Hockey League players return to the Winter Olympics for the first time since 2014 in Sochi, Russia.
NHL, NHLPA, IIHF & IOC close to an agreement for 2026
During Tuesday's edition of Insider Trading on TSN, Pierre LeBrun gave an update on the status of an agreement that would see NHL players at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo in just over a year.
LeBrun said that sources have informed him that the agreement is very close to being signed and that it may just be one meeting away to put a bow on things before making an announcement to the public.
"The NHL and the NHLPA announced that they were going to the Olympics last February at All-Star Weekend in Toronto, but the fact remained that the NHL, NHLPA, IOC, and IIHF had to hammer out an actual agreement, like they always do, when the NHL players participate." LeBrun said.
He added, "That has taken a number of months, zoom calls, and in-person meetings but they are very, very close is what multiple sources have told me. They're basically one meeting away from tying a bow on the agreement. An agreement, by the way, that while it's only for the Olympics in 2026, can be the basis for the 2030 Winter Games agreement as well, once they turn their eyes to that."
Several Vancouver Canucks could represent their nation
With qualification wrapped up for the 2026 Winter Olympics, it's never too early to look ahead at potential rosters for the tournament, with a number of Vancouver Canucks that could be in the mix.
Elias Pettersson (Sweden), J.T. Miller (United States), Quinn Hughes (United States), Brock Boeser (United States), Teddy Blueger (Latvia) and Arturs Silovs (Latvia) all seem like shoo-ins to represent their nations. Thatcher Demko and Kevin Lankinen will also be in the mix, the former however depending on his health.
The puck is set to drop on the 2026 Winter Olympic men's hockey tournament around February 5th, although an official schedule has yet to be released by the IOC.
