A report came out on Thursday morning suggesting that the Aquilini family could be contemplating the sale of the Vancouver Canucks after nearly 20 years of owning the club.
The 2024-25 NHL campaign will be remembered by Vancouver Canucks fans as a disappointing one and one filled with drama on and off the ice, with the team missing the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the fourth time in the last five seasons.
Off the ice, the team will be searching for a new head coach and continue
to look for a location for a practice arena - something fans have been hearing for the last 15 years.
Reports suggest Vancouver Canucks could be partially or fully sold by Aquilini family
Vancouver Canucks fans
haven't been too happy with team owner Francesco Aquilini in recent years for numerous reasons including the lack of a practice facility, not spending enough money on the team and how he
deals with the media.
Francesco Aquilini originally purchased a 50 percent stake in the Vancouver Canucks in November 2004 and two years later, bought the remaining 50 percent for full control of the organization and Rogers Arena.
After nearly 20 years with full control of the Vancouver Canucks and Rogers Arena, it looks like there's a chance there could be a change in ownership, although it's worth noting nothing has been confirmed at this point.
In a recent article in the Toronto Star former NHLer and Stanley Cup champion Nick Kypreos shared that there's questions starting to circulate in Vancouver on whether or not Aquilini family will start to consider selling the Vancouver Canucks.
Kypreos added that it's unclear if it would be a partial share or a majority stake in the Vancouver Canucks, if they decided to go down that route.
"One question starting to circulate out of Vancouver is whether or not the Aquilini family is contemplating selling part or the majority of the Canucks." Kypreos said.
According to Kypreos, there's speculation that Francesco Aqulini's two brothers Paolo and Roberto and his father, Luigi, who have no active roles with the hockey team, are growing tired of the drama surrounding the organization.
"There's speculation that Luigi Aquilini, the founder of Aquilini Investment Group, and his two sons Paolo and Roberto, who have no active roles in the hockey club, may have grown a tad tired of the constant drama surrounding the team. The Canucks are run by Luigi's eldest son Francesco, who's the chairman and governor. Market value for the hockey club and Rogers Arena is speculated to be between $2-3 billion." Kypreos said.
While it's too early to say if this is a legit possibility, it would be welcomed by fans who are hoping for change at the top of the organization which could lead to a major shift in the direction of the club.
