Vancouver Canucks Head Coach Adam Foote could play a big role in the coming years to ensure that captain Quinn Hughes sticks around long-term.

The Vancouver Canucks found their next Head Coach last week after promoting Assistant Coach Adam Foote to the role of bench boss, while giving him a three-year contract.
Foote has a lot of work to do to turn things around in Vancouver in order to help them reach the Stanley Cup Playoffs and since he's been with the club since January 2023, he's formed a number of strong relationships already, including with captain Quinn Hughes.

The Vancouver Canucks are going to have a big decision to make in the coming years as Quinn Hughes is set to become an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2027 and President of Hockey Operations Jim Rutherford knows there's a chance that they could lose him.
Despite some reports suggesting that the Canucks only promoted Adam Foote to appease Quinn Hughes, General Manager Patrik Allvin said that his captain was not involved in the decision.
"Again, it's not about one player, it's about the team here, and we want to build and continue to grow as a team and Quinn is a big part of it," Allvin said last week. "Obviously, the trust and the relationship Adam has with Quinn, it's important for us to get off to a good start and continue to build, but again, Quinn was not involved in this process."

That relationship Quinnn Hughes has formed with Adam Foote has helped him become a better defenseman and back in February, he was full of praise for his coach after an overtime win in Los Angeles.
"Man, I can't, it's hard to break that one down, but I just find like, there's a lot of coaches out there that, you know, scream and yell and they want to, you know, bully their players, intimidate their players. And this is a guy that I would say, coaches his defenseman, coaches his players, like he'd want his kids coached. And then on top of that, with all the experience he has." Hughes said.

Over the next two seasons, that relationship is going to play a big factor in Quinn Hughes' future with the organization and if the team is able to have a great campaign in 2025-26 and go on a deep playoff run, perhaps their captain will decide to put pen-to-paper on an extension when he becomes eligible to do so on July 1st, 2026.
