Former Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes says that he's open-minded about signing a long-term contract extension with the Minnesota Wild in the offseason.
The Quinn Hughes era in Vancouver is officially over after the Canucks traded him to the Minnesota Wild last Friday, with the club set to enter a rebuild/retool according to the front office.
In the weeks leading up to the trade, the Vancouver Canucks were informed that Hughes would not be signing a contract extension with them in the summer, leading to the front office to explore trade options for their now-former captain and managed to work out a deal with the Minnesota Wild that looks like a win-win for both parties.
"The best information I could get in the aftermath of this shocking trade, which Martine Gaillard reminded me last night I never saw coming, is that he [Hughes] informed them I believe right before U.S. Thanksgiving, like around that time, as the Canucks were losing, he was really having trouble dealing with it. If you're a Canucks fan you saw it, if Canuck watcher you saw it. He was really struggling with the losing. It was right around that time before U.S. Thanksgiving that the Canucks were informed he would not be signing an extension with them this summer." Elliotte Friedman said on Saturday.
Quinn Hughes reportedly open to signing long-term extension with Minnesota Wild
On Sunday evening, following his debut with the Wild, Quinn Hughes spoke about his trade to Minnesota and was asked if he would consider remaining with the club on a long-term basis.
Hughes says that he is open minded about signing a long-term extension with the Wild, citing that the club has a solid core with Kirill Kaprizov, Matthew Boldy, among others, and it's close to his home state of Michigan.
"Hughes says he's "extremely open minded" to stay here long-term because they have an "amazing core," it's close to Michigan and for Guerin "sacking" up and trading so many assets for him. He said he will always remember that it was the Wild that stepped up and not other teams." Michael Russo of The Athletic shared on X.
The Minnesota Wild are currently in a contending window and probably just at the beginning of theirs due to the pieces they have and the age of their core, which will only add to the probability of convincing Quinn Hughes to stick around long-term.
