Rick Tocchet Spoke to Quinn Hughes Before Deciding to Leave the Vancouver Canucks

Former Vancouver Canucks head coach Rick Tocchet reportedly spoke to Quinn Hughes before deciding to leave the organization earlier this week to pursue other opportunities.
The Vancouver Canucks have a lot of uncertainty heading into the summer and the team's management group of Patrik Allvin and Jim Rutherford are going to have their hands full trying to improve their roster and hopefully, return to the Stanley Cup Playoffs next spring.
Allvin and Rutherford continue to work towards finding a new head coach following the departure of Rick Tocchet earlier this week and it looks like the future of captain Quinn Hughes may have played a role in their former bench boss' decision to move on.

During Friday's edition of Donnie & Dhali, insider Rick Dhaliwal revealed that Rick Tocchet spoke with team captain Quinn Hughes before deciding that he was going to leave the Vancouver Canucks.
Dhaliwal went on to add that he believes Rick Tocchet has a pretty good idea regarding Quinn Hughes' future with the organization and that likely played a role in his decision to search for a new coaching job elsewhere.
"I think Tocchet has a pretty good indication about Hughes staying or going...You think he bolted for no reason? I think he knows some stuff that other people don't know." Dhaliwal said.
Quinn Hughes was close with Rick Tocchet during his time behind the bench and just before the 2024-25 campaign began, the Canucks captain was full of praise, calling him his favorite coach he's ever had.
"He's great. He's the best. He's my favourite coach ever. He's just a great coach, a great person, cares about his players and it's not like 'I'm the coach, you do whatever I say', he's very open to negotiation, to talk things through, he wants to be on the same page." Hughes said back in October.
Losing Rick Tocchet could have an impact on Quinn Hughes' future, with Jim Rutherford saying on Friday they'll have to consider their options regarding a potential trade during the 2026-27 season if their captain doesn't want to stay.
