The verdict is in for Ian Cole and his future in Vancouver
The free agent market is set to open up in less than one month, on Canada Day at noon ET/9 am PT and the Vancouver Canucks, they have quite a few UFAs on their roster to keep an eye on.
One of those unrestricted free agents is defenceman Ian Cole, who the Canucks signed to a one-year contract last summer to bring in a bit more of a veteran presence on the blue line and add some experience, too, with him being a two-time Stanley Cup champion.
According to Rick Dhaliwal, it appears that Ian Cole will hit the free agent market on July 1st and that his time with the Vancouver Canucks organization has likely come to an end.
"Looks like defenseman Ian Cole will hit the free agent market on July 1st." Dhaliwal said.
Cole, 35, had a so-so tenure with the Vancouver Canucks. Coming into the season, everyone knew what to expect from Ian Cole, a player who is strong on his end and can play a vital role in the penalty kill. However, in their second-round series against the Edmonton Oilers, he didn't play particularly well, which included tipping a puck into his net in overtime of Game 1.
The Ann Arbor, Michigan native appeared in 78 games for the Canucks this season, putting up 11 points (two goals, nine assists), 61 penalty minutes and was a plus-ten. He added two assists in 13 games in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
It'll be interesting to see what comes next for Ian Cole. Once the free agent market opens on July 1st, he shouldn't be without a new team for too long and could be a good fit for a contender in a third-pairing role.
