With the looming reality that Vancouver Canucks captain and MVP Quinn Hughes may decide to leave the organization when his contract expires in 2027, a new trade proposal for his brother Luke Hughes could be a step in the right direction to get him to stay.
With one heck of a disappointing season for the Vancouver Canucks, President of Hockey Operations Jim Rutherford made some questionable comments about Captain Quinn Hughes' future with the team at the end of year press conference.
Jim Rutherford and Patrik Allvin need to start making moves now to get Captain Quinn Hughes to stay.
«It may not boil down to money with [Quinn],» Rutherford said. «He said before he wants to play with his brothers. That would be partly out of our control. In our control if we brought his brothers here.» - Rutherford
Rutherford made the the mistake of opening the door of possibly having to trade him if they can't get a deal done sooner rather than later.
"We control him for a year and two-thirds because if we get to that trade deadline two years from now and it looks like he doesn't want to stay, then we would have to do something." Rutherford said.
The issue is, they both play for
the New Jersey Devils and it would be a whole lot easier for one player to join a team then two.
There really is no scenario that can get both Jack and Luke over to Vancouver, so if they are going to grant Quinn's wish of playing with the siblings, they will have to be more strategic.
With that in mind, a trade proposal has come to the surface that indicates the Canucks could make a major play that would get one of the brothers from the Devils, which would be in the right direction to get them all over to Vancouver at some point.
Tom Willander to the New Jersey Devils, Luke Hughes to the Vancouver Canucks With Luke being the youngest of the three with the least amount of proven stardom in the NHL, it will be easier to get him.
The Canucks just signed top prospect
Tom Willander to an Entry-Level Contract after months of negotiation, but his skill and promise as a future star could be the right package to get Luke Hughes on the Canucks.
Willander's skill set would fill the gap left by Luke in some important ways, including his high-end skating skills and his motor that never quits.
He's miserable to try to play against-he's always engaged physically, competing for pucks and generally making opponents regret whatever decisions they made on the ice to end up facing off against him.
The Canucks obviously want to sign him, but if it starts to seem like they can't, and they could use him to nab one of Quinn's brothers, well-I get the thought process.
Especially when it heads down the path of "if we get Luke now, maybe we can somehow get Jack later". - Hannah Stuart
Will all the rumors swirling, this would be the most likely way to start the process of getting all the Hughes brothers on the same team, well, the right team.
