The Vancouver Canucks have reportedly called the New York Islanders regarding a former first-round pick that would certainly address their need for a centerman.

Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin and Jim Rutherford are planning on being aggressive in the next couple of weeks to help land a player or two that could help the team next season and perhaps put them in contention for a spot in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
One area that the Vancouver Canucks absolutely have to address this summer is down the middle, primarily a second line centerman, to play behind Elias Pettersson and be someone that can drive offense, much like J.T. Miller did in that role before his trade to the New York Rangers in January.
As Allvin and Rutherford continue to evaluate their options, a big name has emerged as a potential target and according to one insider, the club has held discussions with the New York Islanders about a possible trade.

While the New York Islanders are probably very hesitant to move him, that hasn't stopped teams from calling newly-appointed General Manager Mathieu Darche about forward Mat Barzal in recent days.
According to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, the Vancouver Canucks and Utah Mammoth have inquired with the New York Islanders about the availability of the Coquitlam, British Columbia native.
"Islanders remain active. In addition to all their action, I'm told some teams have called the Islanders about Mat Barzal, including Utah and Vancouver. Don't get the sense anything is close right now, but some clubs have inquired." Pagnotta said on Friday night.
Barzal, 28, was a first round pick of the New York Islanders during the 2015 NHL Entry Draft and has gone on to appear in 530 games with the club over parts of nine season.
The 2024-25 campaign was a tough one for Barzal due to an injury, which limited him to just 30 games where he registered 20 points (six goals, 14 assists), four penalty minutes and was a plus-ten.
According to PuckPedia, Barzal has six years remaining on his contract with a cap hit of $9.15 million US and a modified no-trade clause, which could be quite difficult for the Vancouver Canucks to add, unless Patrik Allvin is able to move money out at some point this summer.
