An NHL insider has revealed that the Vancouver Canucks have called the Buffalo Sabres to inquire about the availability of a pending restricted free agent forward.

With the Florida Panthers winning the Stanley Cup on Tuesday night, the offseason around the National Hockey League has officially begun and action is expected to pick up any day now leading up to the Entry Draft next Friday and the start of the free agency period, which is less than two weeks away.
For the Vancouver Canucks, who are hoping to be aggressive this summer, they have a few needs they'll need to address, primarily to their forward group, as Patrik Allvin and Jim Rutherford are scouring the market for a top-six winger and a second line centerman, and it already looks like the GM has his eyes on a player they'd like to target.

Vancouver Canucks reportedly called Buffalo Sabres to inquire about RFA forward

During an appearance on Halford and Brough on Wednesday morning, National Hockey League insider Frank Seravalli revealed that the Vancouver Canucks have called the Buffalo Sabres regarding German forward JJ Peterka, who is set to become a restricted free agent on July 1st.
Seravalli also mentioned that the Canucks have spoken with the Sabres about what a trade could look like for defenseman Bowen Byram,
who reportedly has interest in playing for Vancouver according to Adrian Dater.
"In terms of what the Canucks are up to elsewhere, I mentioned to Dan [Riccio] earlier this week that I believe Vancouver is one of the teams that's been closely following and has called the Sabres on the JJ Peterka file." Seravalli said.

He added, "At varying points, I think they've had some interest in what a Bowen Byram deal could look like. So that part has been ongoing and other than that, how, I think we've all been yet to figure out or trying to drill down on how the Canucks solve for that 2C position that is certainly a glaring hole."
Peterka, 23, would be a great fit to the Vancouver Canucks' lineup as a replacement for pending unrestricted free agent forward Brock Boeser.
The Buffalo Sabres were initially hesitant on wanting to trade the Munich, Germany native and might still be, but have softened their position a little bit, with Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reporting recently that the team is willing to listen to offers for him.
In 77 games this season, Peterka saw nearly a 20-point rise in production as he registered 68 points (27 goals, 41 assists), along with 34 penalty minutes and was a minus-one.
Given the amount of interest that there likely will be in JJ Peterka over the next few weeks, it won't come as a shock to anyone if he ends up getting dealt and it would be interesting to see if Vancouver can put together a package together to acquire him that the Buffalo Sabres would be happy with.
