Vancouver Canucks' Playoff Odds Take a Massive Hit After Crushing Loss to Montreal Canadiens - Here's Why
It was an all-Canadian clash at Rogers Arena on Tuesday night as the Vancouver Canucks,
who made some big changes to their forward lines, welcomed the Montreal Canadiens to town as both teams looked to continue to keep their playoff hopes alive.
The Montreal Canadiens went up 3-0 less than halfway through the game and while Rick Tocchet's group had a strong third period, with goals from
Filip Hronek and
Elias Pettersson, their comeback fell short, falling 4-2 to the Habs.
Last night's game, and frankly every game over the next few weeks, are crucial for the Vancouver Canucks and their chances of making to the Stanley Cup Playoffs for a second year in a row.
Heading into Tuesday's tilt with Montreal, if the Vancouver Canucks were to lose in regulation, which ultimately happened, their odds of qualifying for the playoffs would drop by 9.4%, resulting in a 27.3% chance of making it to the postseason.
"Tonight is a big game for the #Canucks.
If they beat the Habs in regulation, their playoff chances jump 5.8% to 42.4%.
If they lose in regulation, their chances crater 9.4% to 27.3%.
All stats per @MoneyPuckdotcom." Noah Strang of Daily Hive said on X.
However, that percentage dropped even further on Tuesday night due to results elsewhere not going in the Canucks' favour with their playoffs odds,
according to MoneyPuck, going to 24.3%.
Tonight, the Vancouver Canucks hit the road for their biggest game of the 2024-25 season as they take on the Calgary Flames, who sit one point ahead of them for the second wild card spot in the Western Conference with one game in hand.
MoneyPuck
has released new data for potential outcomes ahead of tonight's game in Calgary and if the Vancouver Canucks happen to lose in regulation, they'll have quite the uphill climb to get into the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Regulation win vs Calgary: 33.6% (+ 9.3%)
OT/SO win vs Calgary: 30.5% (+ 6.2%)
OT/SO loss vs Calgary: 21.6% (- 2.7%)
Regulation loss vs Calgary: 16.1% (- 8.3%)
Puck drop for tonight's game
against the Calgary Flames is set for 6 pm PT and can be viewed across Canada on all of Sportsnet's channels.
