Their division rivals and Round 2 opponents in last year's playoffs, the Edmonton Oilers, are among the teams who would like to improve their top four, and while they could end up fighting over options on the backend, insiders say Vancouver's search is more urgent.
TSN and The Athletic's Pierre LeBrun told TSN host Jay Onrait that while both teams are seeking upgrades, he believes based on the need in Vancouver created by Filip Hronek's injury that the Canucks will strike first in the search for a top four defenceman.
LeBrun added that Rutherford and Allvin's history of early moves also leads him to believe the team wouldn't be reluctant to strike early again.
LeBrun said the Oilers want to add as well, but their defence has been steadier than predicted and they don't feel the same urgency as the Canucks.
Any move that could happen will have to wait until at least December 28 when the Christmas trade freeze lifts.
While the Oilers would likely also want to shoot for a player who makes a bigger impact on the blueline, some speculation has arisen as to whether they could be interested in also adding a depth defenceman that has fallen out of favour in Vancouver.
The Canucks are looking to find a home for Vincent Desharnais, and after his solid play in Edmonton that earned him his current two year $2 million contract with the Canucks, the Oilers could be interested in a reunion with the towering d-man.
However the Oilers would likely need the Canucks to retain, which may squash the possibility of a deal.
