LATEST | Analyst points out the five things Allvin needs to achieve for a perfect summer
Patrik Allvin and the Canucks announced on Friday that Oliver Ekman-Larsson had been bought out and that he'd be a free agent. The management group in Vancouver still has lots to do prior to the season in order to make a playoff competitive team out of the Canucks.
Thomas Drance, the journalist covering the Canucks for The Athletic, addressed the subject in a recent article and pointed out exactly what they needed to achieve in order to have a perfect summer.
Allvin's first business order was to rid themselves of OEL's hefty contract and AAV. The second thing on the list, probably the most important thing this summer, signing the team's cornerstone, Elias Pettersson, to a max-term extension.
Drance then listed a point that was going to cause a stir. The analyst was high on the fact that the Canucks needed to rid themselves of J.T. Miller and his contract before his no-trade clause kicked in on July 1st. While we believe moving a high-end performer like J.T. Miller doesn't help reach your end goal, it does help the cap-clearing situation and could help the Canucks load up on assets.
He added that the Canucks should ink the restricted free agent Nils Hoglander to a medium-length extension. Hoglander has shown great improvement during his time in Abbotsford and is now listed as the potential breakout of next season.:
''In our perfect offseason, the Canucks would bet on restricted free agent Nils Höglander to have a shot at levelling up to be an everyday top-six option by signing him to a medium-term second contract in the range of $1.75 million for three years or $2.5 million for four years..''
The analyst added that it was really important for the Canucks to select no later than the 11th. In a draft with that much depth, the Canucks' chances of drafting an elite-level prospect are extremely high.
According to the analyst, this is the way to build a contender down the road and have a core that will grow together.
