LATEST | Heart-breaking news regarding Finnish hockey player who collided head-first with goal post
Last week during a game in Sweden's top women's division, Finnish hockey forward Sanni Hakala was involved in a dangerous collision where she went head-first into the net.
On Thursday, it was revealed that Hakala is paralyzed from the chest down and has reduced function in her arms and hands.
Hakala took to Instagram to share that she'll have to stop playing hockey and may be forced to be in a wheelchair for the rest of her life.
"Not only that I now have to stop playing hockey, something that has been a large part of my life for many years, but that I may be forced to live the rest of my life in a wheelchair," Hakala said.
She added, "Now I need to put all my energy into rehabilitation so that I can recover as well as possible. Therefore, neither I nor HV71 will make any further comments regarding my injury or my status and I ask you all to show consideration and respect for me and my family."
The 26-year-old was a mainstay on the Finnish national team for quite a while now, representing her nation at two Winter Olympics, as well as four Women's World Championships.
