LATEST | IIHF renders major decision regarding their international events
After the tragic passing of Adam Johnson following a cut to his neck by the skate of an opponent, several leagues and teams across the world have begun to mandate neck guards.
Now, the game's governing body, the International Ice Hockey Federation, has made a major decision regarding neck guards at all of their tournaments going forward.
In a statement, the International Ice Hockey Federation announced that neck guards are now mandated at all of their sanctioned tournaments starting with the World Juniors later this month.
"The IIHF Council, on recommendation from its Medical Committee, has decided to mandate the use of a neck laceration protector, specifically designed for this purpose, at all levels of IIHF competitions. The neck laceration protectors are now mandatory for the senior categories in addition to the U20 and U18 categories, for which neck laceration protectors had already been enforced as per IIHF Official Rule Book.
The exact date this mandate will go into effect for the senior categories will be determined by the supply situation. The IIHF remains in close contact with its suppliers to ensure they are able to respond to the current high demand.
Until the rule officially goes into effect, the IIHF continues to strongly recommend that neck laceration protectors are worn by all players performing in an IIHF competition." The IIHF said.
Initially, it was announced that the IIHF was only going to enforce the mandate at the U18 and U20 levels, but now players at the Men's and Women's World Championships will need to wear one during games at their respective tournaments next spring.
Do you agree with the IIHF's mandate or should it be left up to individual players to make their own decisions? Let us know what you think in the poll below!
